Committee Retreats to Chicago

The NRPA Strategic Planning Committee met July 21-23 in Chicago to draft an updated strategic plan for fiscal years 2009-2011.

In advance of the retreat, committee members reviewed survey data collected from 700 general membership respondents, 85 NRPA leaders, 15 state executive directors, 18 young professionals, 18 staff and nine consultants. The data, coupled with survey responses from the committee members themselves, were used as a foundation for the committee to explore environmental assumptions, organizational purpose, vision, values, goals and conditions indicating priority objectives to achieve the goals across the designated three-year period.

The committee convened again via conference call on Tuesday, July 31, to finalize the first draft of the plan and sent it to NRPA leadership on August 6 for response and input by August 31. The committee will consider the input and finalize the draft of the plan for presentation and consideration by the NRPA Board of Trustees at its Sept. 29 meeting in Indianapolis.

In advance of the board meeting, an open forum will be held on Sept. 28 to present the plan and take questions and comments by the membership. Members are encouraged to attend this meeting, scheduled for 2-3 p.m. at the Indiana Convention Center, Room 207.

DRAFT FY09-11 Strategic Plan Circulated for Leadership Input

August 6, 2007

Dear Fellow NRPA Leader:

Thank you for your commitment to NRPA and for all that you do to ensure that we are continually striving to accomplish our mission. As you know, the work of the association is guided by our Strategic Plan, and your continued involvement in updating and implementing the plan is essential.

Attached for your review and input is the first draft of the FY 2009-FY 2011 Strategic Plan that covers the period July 1, 2008 - June 30, 2011. Please share this with those you represent and provide your consolidated feedback to Katie Grove Coffroad at kcoffroad@nrpa.org no later than August 31, 2007.  Input will be compiled and shared with the Strategic Planning Committee (SPC) prior to our September 5 conference call. The SPC will consider the input and determine any revisions to the plan.

The draft plan looks a bit different than in previous years. The intention was for the plan to be more strategic and focused, have enhanced clarity, and to progress toward greater alignment in order to better achieve our mission. Based on considerable input from leaders and members, it has been revised to be more outcome, rather than output, focused. It also includes a proposed vision statement and organizational values. Also, the SPC believes that effective citizen engagement is absolutely critical to the success of achieving NRPA’s vision and fulfilling our mission. This is reflected in a new goal. In addition, as the plan has been revised to be more strategic, some current objectives do not appear in this draft. In this new format, they would be tactics and therefore would be addressed in the tactic development process that begins in October unless they are scheduled for completion in FY’08 (FY’08 ends on June 30, 2008).

You will receive another draft of the FY 2009-2011 Strategic Plan on September 10, 2007 and will be asked to provide input prior to the SPC’s September 25 meeting at the NRPA Congress. There is also a public forum at Congress on September 28 from 2-3:30 pm, location TBA.

You can follow the Strategic Plan’s progress and provide feedback via the Strategic Planning blog that can be accessed via “quick links” at www.nrpa.org . Also, if at any time you have ideas to share with the committee, please provide them via the blog.

Thank you for your continued involvement in this process.
